Short Bio
Dr. Hoda Azari is the FHWA’s Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Research Program Manager. She is a structural engineer by education and her expertise is in the area of NDE and structural health monitoring (SHM) of transportation infrastructure. Dr. Azari has over 10 years of experience in NDE and SHM of highway infrastructure. She has done extensive research studies for condition assessment and damage detection of transportation infrastructure, and performed forensic investigation services to State DOTs. Dr. Azari is the lead for the SHRP2 bridge and tunnel projects. She is also the FHWA’s technical point of contact for application of Unmanned Arial System (UAS), Augmented Reality (AR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in highway infrastructure.
Abstract
This webinar presents the results of a comprehensive review of current practices and policies of a sample of the States Department of Transportation (DOT) in the United States (US) in using NDE technologies to complement the historic visual inspections. Highlights of States who are lead adopters of NDE technologies, and how bridge owners use NDE technologies to assist them in managing bridges more effectively will be identified and presented. The presentation includes the identification of successful and unsuccessful case studies on concrete, steel and timber bridges, for the effective and ineffective use of these NDE technologies to meet bridge management objectives. Challenges and lessons learned in implementation of NDE technologies in each State will be discussed. The main challenges for each State that could be addressed by advancements in NDE, NDE technologies that are currently in practice by State DOTs on project level and network level, and their return on investment quantified by the State DOTs will be presented. This presentation includes best practices for leveraging NDE technologies within a DOT bridge management plan and highlights of how bridge owners use NDE tools and technologies to assist them in managing bridges more effectively.

• learn about the challenges, lessons learned, and return on investment of State DOTs in the US with regards to application of NDE.
